Celine turns three, under the sea
An under-the-sea third birthday in Woodland Hills, in lavender, turquoise and peach, with a mermaid who brought a bubble show the kids would not leave.
Celine turned three in a Woodland Hills backyard, and the brief was easy: get the kids in the pool and give them something to watch. We went under the sea for it. Lavender, light turquoise and peach, fishing net through the balloon garland, a clamshell chair by the door. Then a mermaid walked in with a bucket of bubbles and took over the afternoon.

The signature moment
A mermaid, and a bubble show nobody would leave
We booked a mermaid, and she arrived in full. Red hair, a shell crown, a sequinned tail that caught the sun every time she moved. That alone would have been enough for a table of three-year-olds. Then she brought out the bubbles.
Not the little wand kind. Great soft clouds of them, handed over to be held. The kids stood in a ring with foam balanced on their palms, working out how it was staying up. Every one of them stayed for the whole show, and three-year-olds do not usually stay for anything.
What she asked for
The pool, and something to watch
Her mum wanted two things. She wanted the kids in the pool, and she wanted a show. Something that would hold them long enough for the grown-ups to sit down and eat.
So we planned the afternoon around both. Under the sea gave us a look that worked wet: lavender, light turquoise and peach, a clamshell chair by the door, fishing net through the balloon garland. The mermaid gave us the show.
