Mila is a wild one
A wildflower first birthday in Northridge, in lilac, butter yellow and soft pink, with the backyard split into three play zones so every age had somewhere to go.

Mila turned one in a Northridge backyard in June. The look was wildflowers: lilac, butter yellow and blush, green gingham on the tables, jars of daisies and cosmos down the middle. The harder part was the guest list. A first birthday brings every age at once, so we planned the yard around that before we planned a single flower.

The signature moment
One backyard, three places to play
A first birthday is never really a party for a one-year-old. It is a party for her cousins, her parents' friends, the four-year-olds who arrive at full speed, and the babies who are still lying down. Most of them cannot use the same thing.
So we gave the yard three jobs. A white bounce house with a slide and a ball pit at the back for the big kids. A soft play set closer in for the babies. A coloring table in the shade for the ones in between. Then we ran the long gingham tables down the middle, facing the bounce house, so the grown-ups could sit and eat and still see everyone.
Nobody had to be walked anywhere. The four-year-olds went to the back and stayed there, the babies stayed low, and the parents got a chair.

The back of the yard and the shade, doing two completely different jobs.
What she said afterwards
Her mum told us the thing she loved most was that she got to enjoy her own first birthday. She was not carrying anyone between activities or standing at the edge watching for a child about to get bored.
That is usually the whole difference. The wildflowers, the gingham and the cake are what the photos are of. The zones are what let her sit down.
