Berry Sweet First Birthday

A loud, sweet, unapologetically pink first birthday built on a wall of red and blush balloons, a candy-pink kids' table and flat after flat of fresh strawberries.

The details

How to get the look

  • Spend the budget on one wall, not on the whole yard — and build that wall out of several pieces rather than one. A little strawberry market stall (pale wood frame, scalloped pink-and-cream striped awning, a counter and crates you can actually load with baskets of fruit and potted plants) pushed shoulder to shoulder with a tall arched lettered board, a lower scalloped panel overlapping where they meet and a slim one behind, so the silhouette steps up and down instead of running flat. Pack an organic balloon installation in four tones around the whole thing — strawberry red, bubblegum, blush and cream — until no yard shows through. It is the photo everyone takes, and everything else can be simple.
  • Order the sign lettered, and check the spelling before it ships. "Berry First Birthday" in a simple painted script on a tall cream arch. Have it made blank if you want to reuse the arch — a blank arch with a good balloon wall still reads as a statement, a misspelled one is a photograph you cannot use.
  • Bows on every single chair. Fat pink linen bows on tiny wooden chairs, a candy-pink scalloped cloth and striped straws are what make a kids' table look designed rather than just short. It is inexpensive and it photographs from every angle.
  • Keep the cake childish on purpose. One short chunky tier in pink buttercream with big swoops, a thick fall of rainbow sprinkles and strawberries piled on top reads far better at a first birthday than tiers and piped ruffles — and it costs less. Put the number on the cake itself, a fat red 1 piped straight onto the front, rather than buying a topper: it photographs better than anything sitting above the cake and there is nothing to knock over. Order a tiny plain smash cake beside it so the table still looks styled after the small one has been demolished, which is roughly four minutes in.
  • Buy the strawberries by the flat and use them as decor. Six flats runs the kids' table, fills the crates and baskets on the market stall and still loads the dessert stands. Keep every plate, cup and cloth cream, white or pink so the fruit stays the only true red in frame.
