Girls' Night Elevated
A candlelit dinner party at home in espresso, blush and ivory: four cocktails, one grazing table, and enough taper candles that nobody reaches for the overhead lights.
- Espresso
- Blush
- Ivory

These boards are ideas rather than photographs. The images show how a theme could look, not a party we have styled. Our real celebrations live in The Bubbly Files.
The details
How to get the look
- Light the whole room with candles and buy far more than feels reasonable. Thirty to forty is the number for a dinner of eight: a pair of ivory ten inch tapers in brass holders every two settings down the table, a ribbed glass votive at each place, and another eight or ten scattered on the sideboard, the bar and the floor by the mirror. Light them twenty minutes before anyone arrives so the wax has pooled and the flames have stopped smoking, turn the overheads off completely, and leave one lamp on a low dimmer in a far corner so faces are not lit from underneath all night.
- The dark brown linen is doing more than the flowers are. A crumpled espresso or chocolate washed linen cloth over a walnut or marble surface is what makes brass glow and blush look expensive, because every warm thing on the table has something dark to sit against. Put these exact same mauve roses on white linen and they go grey and faintly bridal. Wash the linen and do not iron it. The creases catch candlelight and a flat pressed cloth reads like a rental.
- Keep the flowers in three tones and no more: dusty mauve roses, burgundy dahlias or ranunculus, and cream. Amnesia and Quicksand roses are the mauve you want and most grocery flower sections carry something close in the fall. Skip fuchsia, true purple, bright red roses and anything with baby's breath, all of which snap the room back to a birthday party. Build two low arrangements rather than one long runner so guests can see each other across the table, and let dried astilbe or seeded branches do the height instead of buying more stems.
- Four cocktails, not a full bar. Espresso martini, dirty martini, spicy margarita, Aperol spritz covers almost everyone and means one bottle each of vodka, tequila, Aperol and prosecco plus espresso, olive brine and a jalapeño. Batch the martinis in a pitcher in the fridge before guests arrive and shake to order only if you feel like it. Serve everything in coupes, garnish with a dark cherry or a fig half on the rim, and set a brass ice bucket at the end so the prosecco pours itself.
- Make a grazing table the centrepiece so you are not cooking during your own party. Build it on wood boards straight on the marble, allow about five ounces per person, and work in one line: three cheeses, two cured meats, olives, marinated mushrooms, grapes, halved figs, fig jam, grissini standing up in a tall dark cylinder for height. Assemble it an hour ahead and cover with a tea towel. The three printed cards, "good food better company" on the framed sign, on the little ivory card at each plate and as "good drinks better company" on the bar menu, cost one design file and are the thing that makes the whole night look styled rather than gathered.
