A Little Cutie Is on the Way

A citrus baby shower under olive trees, built on real oranges, orange blossom and butter yellow balloons, with a jar of marmalade for every guest to carry home.

How to get the look

Buy real fruit and buy too much of it. A case of navel oranges and a bag of mandarins costs less than one floral centerpiece and it is the whole theme. Pile them in stone pedestal bowls, sit them loose in a wooden crate under the dessert table, halve a few and lay the cut faces straight on the linen where the light catches them. Cut the halves the morning of, not the night before, because the edges dry and go dull within a few hours.
The greenery is what stops it turning into a fruit stand. Olive and eucalyptus, cut long and left loose, running through the balloon garland and down the middle of the table. Orange and butter yellow on their own read as a kids party. The moment you thread sage green through it the whole thing grows up, which is why sage is the third colour on the board rather than the peach that most citrus boards reach for.
Keep the flowers white and apricot, never pink. White daisies, chamomile, and apricot and butter yellow roses in cream footed urns, arranged low and wide so people can see each other across the table. Real citrus blossom if you can get it, in small quantities, because the scent does as much as the look.
Print the phrase once and let it repeat in miniature. One arched backdrop panel does the heavy lifting, then the same three words show up small on the cake front and on the favour tags, in the same grey serif with cutie in orange script. That repetition is what makes it feel designed rather than assembled, and it costs one design file.
Put the drinks where people walk in and let them be the colour. Two glass dispensers on rattan risers, one lemonade with lemon wheels floating in it and one orange juice, and nothing else on that table but crystal tumblers and a bowl of fruit. Label them in two words on small framed cards. Cloudy juice photographs better than clear, and the wheels have to go in within an hour or they sink and go pale.
Set the table in warm metal and woven texture. Rattan chargers, scalloped white plates, gold flatware, cut crystal, ivory tapers in brass and amber votives lit even in daylight. Sage green ribbon tying every napkin is the cheapest detail on the table and the one that ties it to the greenery overhead.
