Jurassic-Inspired First Birthday

A dinosaur jungle first birthday for a sunny backyard in forest, sage and latte, with a life-size T-rex at the arch and a fossil dig crate waiting at every seat.

  • Forest
  • Sage
  • Latte
A composed moodboard titled "Jurassic-Inspired First Birthday" in green script, with three palette dots in forest green, sage and latte tan, and the caption "A sunny backyard jungle with a fossil dig at every seat" on a forest green tile. A wide tile at the top right shows a dessert table in front of a blank cream arched panel with a green, cream and latte balloon garland. A row of three tiles below it holds a sage cake lettered "Liam turns one" under a T-rex topper, a drinks table under a fringed cream umbrella, and small wooden fossil crates set along a walnut table. The large centre tile shows a life-size T-rex on a boulder beside an arched cream panel lettered "Liam turns one", with matte balloons, ferns, speckled eggs and wooden trail signs. A small tile at its lower right shows speckled eggs nested in moss between rocks with a lantern. A long tile at the bottom left shows a kids' table of sand-filled fossil dig crates with the arch behind. The Bubbly SoCal logo and bubblysocal.com sit at the lower right.

These boards are ideas rather than photographs. The images show how a theme could look, not a party we have styled. Our real celebrations live in The Bubbly Files.

The details

A rustic wooden gateway between two grey stone pillars hung with ivy, its arched crossbeam carved with a three-toed footprint and its double doors open onto a flagstone path. A balloon garland in sage, forest, cream and latte runs up the left side over monstera and ferns. Speckled eggs, boulders and brass lanterns line the path, a blank wooden arrow signpost stands to the right, and a T-rex peers out of the greenery past the doors.
The way in
A life-size T-rex standing on a grey boulder beside an arched cream panel lettered "Liam turns one" over a dark green three-toed footprint. A matte balloon garland in forest, sage, cream and latte climbs the top and right side of the panel, tucked with monstera and palm leaves. Oversized speckled eggs, ferns and rocks are banked along the base, a wooden signpost on the right reads Dino Trail, Food & Drinks, Activity Zone and Restrooms, and a stepping stone path leads up to it under a sunny tree.
The T-rex arch
A long walnut table lined with green metal bistro chairs, set at each place with a monstera print placemat and a pine crate of sand holding a plaster fossil, wooden digging tools, small dinosaur figures and a mini palm, some with "Little Explorer" cards. Ferns, moss, rocks, speckled eggs and dinosaur figures run down the centre. A wooden signpost reading Dig, Explore, Discover and Roar stands at the far end, with the T-rex and an arched panel lettered "Liam turns one" behind.
The kids' table
A large wooden sandbox on the lawn half filled with a buried plaster dinosaur skeleton, loose bones, small black dinosaur figures and trowels, beside a wooden crate of white and green buckets with a mallet. A blank A-frame wooden sign carved with a three-toed footprint stands to the right, under a fringed cream umbrella and a shade sail, with monstera, ferns and palms behind.
The dig pit
A walnut dessert table in front of a blank cream arched panel with a green, cream and latte balloon garland, backed by palms and monstera. Tree-slice risers and stump stands hold chocolate dipped treats on sticks, cupcakes with green spots and leaf picks, layered dessert cups, footprint cookies iced sage on cream, speckled egg cake pops in glass jars and mossy cups topped with small dinosaurs. A large speckled egg, a brass lantern, a stegosaurus figure, moss and ferns line the front edge.
The sweet table
A two tier cake with a sage top tier lettered "Liam turns one" above a dark green three-toed footprint and a cream lower tier carved in a mountain relief, topped with a T-rex figure standing in ferns and pebbles. Behind it, wooden gates stand open between stone pillars hung with lit wall torches.
The cake
A walnut drinks table under a fringed cream umbrella, with two tall clear glass dispensers on wooden stands, one of lemonade with lemon wheels and one of water with cucumber and mint. A row of small glass bottles of lemonade with green striped straws sits in front, a galvanized tub of bottled drinks on ice stands to the right, and a T-rex figure among ferns, speckled eggs and stones sits to the left.
The drinks table
Small pine crates with rope handles set along a walnut table, each holding a plaster fossil, a wooden brush and a dinosaur figure in kraft crinkle paper, alternating with cream drawstring bags tied with sage ribbon. Footprint cookies iced in sage and cream, speckled eggs, smooth grey stones and loose fern and monstera leaves fill the gaps, with a sunny lawn and boulders behind.
Fossils to take home

How to get the look

  • Matte balloons in forest, sage, cream and latte, four sizes from 5 to 24 inch, clustered heavier on the right shoulder of the arched panel and thinning to a few small greens on the left where the T-rex stands. Tuck real monstera and palm leaves into the garland as you build so it sits inside the jungle. The life-size T-rex is a rental, and it looks best up on a boulder with its head at the panel's shoulder, as if it just walked out of the ferns.
  • Put a fossil dig crate at every seat at the kids' table, so the place setting is also the activity. Each one is a shallow pine tray of play sand over a plaster fossil, with a wooden brush and mallet, two small dinosaurs and a mini palm, on a monstera print placemat. We'd use a walnut table and green metal bistro chairs because sand and frosting wipe straight off metal, and the chair green picks up the forest balloons from across the yard.
  • Build the sweets on walnut tree slices and stump stands so the table has four or five heights. Keep every treat in the palette: footprint cookies iced sage on cream, cupcakes with green spots and leaf picks, and speckled egg cake pops standing in clear jars. Run moss and fern fronds along the front edge and stop at one lantern and one big egg.
  • Speckled eggs cost the least of anything on the board and you can use them everywhere: oversized ones at the base of the arch and the gate, hand-sized ones scattered down the tables, and egg cake pops on the sweets. For greenery, rent potted ferns, palms and monstera and bank them three deep around anything with a hard edge, then fill the gaps with grey boulders.
  • Serve every drink in clear glass so the colour comes from the fruit. That means lemonade with lemon wheels and cucumber mint water in two tall dispensers raised on walnut stands, small milk bottles with striped paper straws, and glass bottles in a galvanized tub of ice. A fringed cream umbrella over the table keeps the ice and the grown-ups in shade at noon.
