Kids Halloween Party

A bright backyard Halloween for little kids in pumpkin, lavender and cream with black accents, friendly ghosts, a balloon arch, pumpkin painting and a striped dessert cart.

  • Pumpkin
  • Lavender
  • Black
A collage for a kids' Halloween party with a palette strip of black, charcoal, pumpkin, terracotta, blush orange, lavender and cream above nine backyard scenes, including a balloon arch entrance, an arched backdrop, a kids' table, a dessert station, a ghost cake and wooden direction signs.

These boards are ideas rather than photographs. The images show how a theme could look, not a party we have styled. Our real celebrations live in The Bubbly Files.

The details

A white wooden arbor with a cream Happy Halloween sign, three hanging ghost cutouts and a rope spider web is wrapped in black, lavender, cream, peach and orange balloons with jack-o'-lantern faces, and lanterns line a stone path to a long table beyond.
The way in
Overlapping arch panels in orange, cream, peach and mauve with black paper bats stand on a lawn behind a cutout ghost, a cream haunted house with lit windows, stacked pumpkins and a black, cream, orange and lavender balloon garland.
The backdrop
A long wooden table with a crinkled lavender runner holds black plates with white napkins folded into ghosts, mini pumpkins and dried flowers, and child-size orange and black chairs each have an orange balloon tied on under string lights.
The kids' table
A wooden Pumpkin Decorating sign with black bats stands over a table of white and orange mini pumpkins, jars of paintbrushes, paint pots in orange, black, lavender and white, and wooden palettes, with three spotted mushroom stools in front.
Pumpkin painting
A wooden cart under a black and white scalloped awning has a cream Tricks and Treats sign and holds ghost-topped cupcakes, meringue ghosts, black cauldrons of candy, white-dipped pretzel rods and jack-o'-lantern pails, with balloons at one corner.
Dessert cart
A three-tier cream buttercream cake topped with a fondant ghost has a gold-leaf moon, black bats, a haunted house silhouette and tiny sugar pumpkins, and sits on a wood slice among mini pumpkins, ghost figurines and jars of candy.
The cake
Cellophane bags of iced ghost cookies and candy corn, tied with black satin ribbon and cream tags, one reading You're Spooktacular!, are lined up in a wooden crate.
Take-home treats
A cream sofa with orange, peach, lavender and jack-o'-lantern pillows sits on a black and cream patterned rug with two jute poufs and a stone fire bowl, under white ghost lanterns hanging from a tree, with a peach and orange balloon column behind.

How to get the look

  • Build the garland from 5, 11 and 18 inch balloons in pumpkin, lavender, cream and peach, with black as roughly one balloon in five. Plan on 12 to 15 balloons per running foot so it reads full from the path, and tuck the small 5 inch ones into the gaps.
  • Keep black to the plates, the paper bats, the ribbon and a handful of balloons. Once it covers more than that, a daytime kids' party starts to look like a grown-up haunted house, and the cream and lavender are what keep it soft and bright.
  • Seat little guests at a table about 22 inches high with 12 inch chairs so three to seven year olds can sit with their feet on the ground. Tie one 11 inch pumpkin balloon to each chair back so every child can spot a seat and has something to carry home.
  • Paint the pumpkins instead of carving them, since knives and small kids don't mix and painted ones last for weeks. Set out about one and a half mini pumpkins or white baby boos per child, washable acrylic in orange, black, lavender and white to match the palette, and a stack of old napkins for hands.
  • Fill favor bags with iced ghost cookies and loose candy corn in clear cellophane, tied with black ribbon and a cream tag. Unwrapped homemade treats stay in the palette, while branded candy wrappers bring in colours nobody picked, so if you do buy wrapped candy, pour it into black cauldrons.
