Wild About 50
A 50th in black, chrome and candlelight, with leopard and zebra used as upholstery, a ceiling of mirror balls and chrome spheres floating in the pool after dark.
- Onyx
- Chrome
- Champagne

These boards are ideas rather than photographs. The images show how a theme could look, not a party we have styled. Our real celebrations live in The Bubbly Files.
The details
How to get the look
- Black and chrome latex in 11 inch and 5 inch, run in columns up both walls of the hallway instead of an arch, with metallic fringe tails dropped to the floor from each cluster. A hallway hands you two walls to work with, and an arch needs a doorway to sit in.
- Black is the hard part after dark. On camera it goes to a flat hole unless something warm sits behind it, so wash the cream walls and columns with amber uplight and let the black banner, the black linen and the black planters read as shapes against that glow. Light around the black, not straight at it.
- Leopard and zebra behave better as materials than as pattern. Give each one a job: zebra for the floor runner and a few chair backs, leopard for cushions and the table runner, and stop at about three printed surfaces per room before the whole thing tips into costume shop.
- Mirror balls in three sizes, roughly 16, 12 and 8 inch, hung on clear line at staggered drops off the same wires carrying the string lights so the ceiling has depth instead of one flat layer. On tables, cluster them in odd numbers of five or seven with a couple of white roses pushed into the gaps.
- In the water use sealed chrome spheres rather than tiled disco balls, which shed their mirrors in chlorine. Line the coping with black framed lanterns every three feet or so, and keep every candle a warm white wax so the flames and the uplighting sit at the same temperature in photos.
