Wildflower Baby in Bloom

A garden baby shower built on real wildflowers, pastel glass and painted buttercream, in blush, sage and lilac, with a seed packet for every guest to take home.

The details

The Baby in Bloom arch

The wildflower cake
A long whitewashed table set outdoors, run down the center with glass jars and vases of loose wildflowers and pastel taper candles in brass holders. Each place has a rattan charger, a glazed cream plate, a sage green napkin, a pressed flower name card and gold flatware, with pressed glass goblets in lilac and green above. Wooden cross back chairs carry sage sashes and small posies, and the Baby in Bloom arch and its balloon garland stand at the head of the table under olive trees.
The long table

How to get the look

  • Real flowers do the work here, so put the budget there and keep everything else quiet. We buy in bulk from the flower market two days out and let it open in buckets of cool water overnight, then arrange loose and tall on the morning. Cosmos, daisies, lavender, scabiosa, feverfew, waxflower and anything with a thin stem that moves. The trick is to under arrange. Cut stems at three different heights, let them lean out of the vessel instead of sitting in a dome, and use far more small vessels than you think you need rather than three big ones.
  • The arch is a rented panel, not a build. A printed arched backdrop and a balloon garland is the fastest hero in the business, and the balloons are the only place we allow anything shiny near the palette. Matte balloons in blush, lilac, butter, sage and cream, clustered at the top left and running down the right shoulder rather than symmetrically, and then real flowers banked along the base so the panel grows out of the ground. That last step is the one people skip and it is the one that makes it look styled rather than delivered.
  • Set the table in glass, not ceramic. Pressed glass goblets in lilac and green, gold flatware, and a rattan charger under a plain cream plate. Sage green napkins are the only textile on the table and they are what holds the whole setting together, so buy good linen and press it. Pastel tapers in brass, lit even in daylight. Pressed flower name cards at each place cost almost nothing and are the detail guests photograph.
  • Keep lettering to two surfaces. The arch and one framed sign, and nothing else. Short words on both. The moment you print a sentence on every bag, box and packet the table starts reading as stationery rather than styling.
  • The favour is the theme. Wildflower seed packets and a linen tote with a sage bow, so the shower carries on in someone's garden. Order the seeds plain and add your own pressed flower tag rather than paying for custom printing, and set them out on the table as part of the styling rather than by the door.
